What is Local Cryotherapy?
Local Cryotherapy is used to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and swelling in specific areas. Unlike Whole Body Cryotherapy, which stimulates cold receptors all over the body in order to trigger an internal systemic anti-inflammatory response, local cryotherapy allows us to treat a specific location and is much more powerful and efficient than ice packs. Patients frequently combine local sessions with Whole Body Cryotherapy, to treat problem areas both from the “inside out” as well as from the “outside in”. Local cryotherapy treatments generally take about 3-5 minutes depending on the area treated. A local cryotherapy treatment has a natural analgesic effect and a reduction in muscle tension in the treatment area.

Local cryotherapy is beneficial if the client is facing a particular kind of injury or trouble area. This is common in athletes who have sustained an injury, or anyone who has sustained sprain or muscle pull, or is recovering from surgery. Combining whole body cryotherapy with local cryotherapy is especially useful for those patients who have chronic inflammatory conditions.
Local cryotherapy is commonly applied to:
- Ankles
- Elbows
- Neck
- Shoulders
- Knees
- Lower Back
- Tendonitis
How Does Local Cryotherapy Work?
Unlike our whole body cryosauna, local cryotherapy uses a smaller machine that includes a hand held piece allowing us to apply nitrogen vapor to the troubled area. The treatment only takes 3-5 minutes to complete and leaves the client with benefits that far exceed what traditional icing can provide. Local cryotherapy is super relaxing and allows us to treat people that are unable to do whole body cryotherapy.
